Do you ever think that meditation is for hippies? Or people that are a bit “way out there”? Maybe it always seems to be creative arty type people?
Well it’s really not. Mindfulness and meditation is for everyone and that includes some of the most successful Executives and businesses today.
In this blog I’d like to explore some of these CEOs and businesses with you and get their take on mindfulness and meditation. So were going to look at:
- Bill Gates – no introduction needed right?
- Marnie Abramson – CEO of Tower Companies real estate firm.
- Nancy Slomowitz – CEO of Executive Management Associates
- Ramani Ayer – former Chairman and CEO of The Hartford Financial Services Group
- Russell Simmons – Founder of Def Jam Records
So I’m not going to spend any time describing Bill Gates’ career, we all know who he is and needless to say he’s very successful in the world of business. It may be surprising to some that he regularly meditates and has this to say about it…
“I’m certainly not an expert, but I now meditate two or three times a week, for about 10 minutes each time.” “I now see that meditation is simply exercise for the mind, similar to the way we exercise our muscles when we play sports. For me, it has nothing to do with faith or mysticism. It’s about taking a few minutes out of my day, learning how to pay attention to the thoughts in my head, and gaining a little bit of distance from them.”Bill Gates – Founder of Microsoft
Marnie is the CEO Tower Companies real estate firm amongst many other roles. Marnie tried meditation after hearing other colleagues talking about it, mainly to help deal with her crazy work life.
“I would say that arranging a TM course for your employees is probably the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way of getting more out of your workers than you could ever imagine.”Marnie Abramson – Tower Companies
Nancy is an Entrepreneur that built her company, Executive Management Associates from a one women shop, into a multi-million dollar business. Not only does she meditate herself, but she provides classes for her employees and reduced her companies health care insurance by doing so!
“TM (transcendental meditation) produced tangible, practical benefits in both their professional and personal lives. The workplace environment soon grew from toxic to harmonious among other positive changes. And surprisingly, the company’s cost of healthcare insurance actually went down due to a reduction in sick claims.”Nancy Slomowitz – Executive Management Associates, Inc.
Ramani, the former Chairman and CEO of The Hartford Financial Services Group, has practiced meditation for more than 25 years!
“The Transcendental Meditation technique has been ideally suited to my hectic life. It has demonstrably reduced my stress and helped to maintain my good health, and has immeasurably benefited my family and business relationships. Importantly, it has helped me to make clearer, more effective decisions on the job.”Ramani Ayer – The Hartford Financial Services Group
Russell is an American entrepreneur, record executive, writer, and film producer. He was a co-founder of Def Jam Records, amongst other roles. In 2010 he wrote a column at the Huffington Post.
“About two years ago, I visited a school in South Africa where all the students practiced one particular form of meditation-Transcendental Meditation (TM). They were bright, alert, energized with life. A short while later I returned to New York and I met a long-time TM teacher, Bob Roth…Russell Simmons – Co-Founder of Def Jam Records
Even though I had been meditating in different ways for over 10 years, I asked Bob to teach me. I have now been doing TM for two years. It has changed my experiences in meditation and therefore my experiences in life.
So there you have it. Some really successful people from the business world that all use meditation regularly to help them get through their busy lives, and some share the experience with their employees to increase productivity and reduce sickness.
Take care of yourselves – and why not give it a go 🙂
